Tribute

Dolphin In a tribute to the late Mary Joyce Dolphin, formerly Noble and McGouran, née Craggs, JOAN THUBRON and MARGARET DOBSON write:

Joyce Dolphin passed away on 29 December 2003 after a long and courageous battle against cancer. Her fighting spirit and will to live for the last three and a half years was remarkable. We met as students at Sunderland in 1961 and have remained friends since.

Born in Langley Park near Durham, Joyce registered in 1965. After her student days she moved to High Wycombe, then to Slough and finally to Ely some 15 years ago.

Her career was mainly spent in community pharmacy with her final post managing Lloyds in Soham. Joyce was a consummate professional. Her high standards, honesty and integrity were admired both by her colleagues and her friends.

Joyce excelled at hockey, indoor bowls, backgammon and, in recent years, golf. She met her last husband, Mick, at Ely Golf Club. They enjoyed a wonderful, happy, married life together, although tragically cut short.

She was immensely proud of her daughter Andrea who, having graduated from Cambridge, is now head of the Spanish department at the University of Durham .

Joyce’s thirst for a challenge never diminished and she recently mastered Spanish so that she could converse with her granddaughter and son-in-law in their own language.

Joyce touched the lives of many people as witnessed by the number of friends who attended the funeral at Cambridge crematorium, and true to form she had arranged the service.

We feel privileged to have known her so long and to be counted as close friends. Our thoughts are with Mick, Andrea and granddaughter Alma at this sad time.

Skeeles In a tribute to the late Victor Douglas Skeeles, STUART MOUL, secretary, Avon Local Pharmaceutical Committee, and DAVID FIFE, chairman, Avon LPC, write:

We were both saddened to hear of the death of a past member of Avon LPC and also a past employer of both of us.

Douglas Skeeles was born at 11pm on Armistice Day, 11 November 1918, which was a fitting start to a memorable life and career.

Douglas did not start school until he was nine because of the severe asthma that he suffered. However, after a period of apprentice in Bangor, County Down, Northern Ireland, he qualified as a pharmacist at the age of 20 but had to wait until the age of 21 before being allowed on the pharmaceutical register.

Douglas served as chief gas identification officer for Belfast during the 1939–45 war before moving to Bristol in 1947. He then went on to open a number of pharmacies in villages surrounding Bristol, serving the needs of his local communities. He was a member of Avon LPC for many years.

We each worked for Douglas in one of his branches after qualifying from university. We were always greatly impressed with the standard of these pharmacies and his gentlemanly attitude to us and his other staff. We both have a lot to be thankful for from our experience of working for him. It was his guidance and professional assistance which gave the confidence for each of us to buy our first pharmacy. Without this help, we probably would not be in the fortunate position we find ourselves in today.

Douglas retired from pharmacy in 1983, when his son Jonathan took over the family business. In fact, Douglas remained active in the business up to the time of his death.

As well as his interests in pharmacy, Douglas was deeply involved with the work of Long Ashton Parish Council. He served as a member for over 40 years and was rewarded by being made MBE in 2000.

We extend our sympathies to our friend and colleague Jonathan Skeeles and his family and also to Douglas’s widow, Nan.
