New contract

Let patients help pay to fund the new pharmacy contract

From Mr P. M. Kirby, MRPharmS

I was interested in the debate regarding the funding of universities by increasing the amount contributed by students to pay for a proportion of their tuition fees.

Having now won this vote, the Government has surely set a precedent by which those using a service must pay a proportion of the cost of that service. It then occurred to me that the Government would therefore be in favour of any patient requiring a medicine paying a certain amount towards its cost. This may sound simplistic. However, what an excellent way of finding that extra revenue required to fund the new pharmacy contract and reducing the excessive waste in the NHS to boot.

Paul Kirby
Billingham, Cleveland
