Council members seek clarification of Charter vote
When the February
Council meeting considered the minutes of its previous
meeting (PJ, 13 December 2003, p819),
two members asked to clarify their position on the proposed new Charter.
Gerald Alexander
said that, although his name had been listed among the
abstentions, he had been opposed to the submission of the draft new Charter
to the Privy Council. It had been his intention to vote against the motion,
just as he had done against the motion to accept the final version of
the draft new Charter. His views had been clear on the day. He wanted
it minuted that he had intended to vote against the petition going forward
to the Privy Council.
Ashwin Tanna said that he had voted against the final wording of Object
3 of the new Charter because the text had been changed from the wording
that he and another 18 or 20 members had found satisfactory on the previous
day. He had specifically mentioned to the Council why he could not support
the revised Object, and he wanted the reason for his opposition recorded.
The requests were rejected on the grounds that the minutes could only
record what actually happened and had never included the reasons behind
members’ votes.
