Workforce academy

Is the new academy restricted to community pharmacy?

On reading Peter Noyce’s article about the Academy for the Study and Development of the Pharmacy Workforce (PJ, 24 January, p88), I was somewhat bemused not to see any reference to those pharmacists who work outside “the pharmacy”. On a repeat reading, I came to the conclusion that in fact the academy is restricted to the study of the people who work in community pharmacy. Perhaps it would be helpful to designate it as the Academy for the Study and Development of the Community Pharmacy Workforce. This would ensure that it is clear to all exactly what it is aiming to achieve.

The article profiles the 2004 pharmacy graduate cohort study and publications from the Manchester team on the national workforce census, both of which cover pharmacists in all sectors. We have recently completed a study on pharmacists “migrating” into primary care posts and currently are involved in a project on the pharmacy academic workforce. However, given that most pharmacists practise in community pharmacy, it would be odd indeed if a large part of our work did not relate to it. The article also specifically refers to the Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education developing learning programmes for hospital and prison pharmacists, pharmacists wanting to become supplementary prescribers and pharmacy technicians.

Clearly the workforce academy is not exclusive to any sector of pharmacy.
