Trevor Jones appointed to public health commission by WHO

Trevor Jones: exciting opportunity |
Trevor Jones, director-general of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry, has been appointed to a World Health Organization commission.
The international commission has been set up to look at intellectual
property rights, innovation and public health, as well as the issue of
appropriate funding and incentive mechanisms for the creation of new
medicines and other products against diseases that disproportionately
affect developing countries. It will report on the prevalence of diseases
that particularly affect poor people and review the volume and distribution
of existing research directed at these diseases.
The commission is expected to make proposals for improving incentive
and funding regimens designed to stimulate the production of new medicines
and make them accessible where they are needed.
Professor Jones has been appointed in his own right and not as a representative
of any particular interest. He said: “I see this as an exciting
opportunity to build on what [the pharmaceutical industry has] been doing
for many years and to find pragmatic solutions to the human tragedy of
ill-health in developing nations.” |
