Canesten Combi

Medicine reclassification

Glad Canesten Combi was not reclassified

From Mr P. J. Walker, MRPharmS

Last autumn the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency published the consultation document “Request to reclassify Canesten Combi from P to GSL”. The Boots Pharmacists’ Association submitted a response to this consultation opposing the request.

It is encouraging to note that the BPA’s position on this is supported by the conclusion of the recent MeReC Bulletin “An update on vulvovaginal candidiasis (thrush)” (PDF 90K). It states that it is important that health care professionals help women to obtain appropriate treatment by providing them with information and advice about all vaginal infections and formulations available for the treatment of thrush. In addition, health care professionals should know when to refer patients for further investigation. Such counselling cannot be provided during the purchase of GSL products from non-pharmacy outlets.
