First supplementary prescribers in England pass their exams

The first pharmacists in England to become supplementary prescribers are likely to come from Sunderland University.

Carol Candlish, supplementary prescribing course lead at Sunderland University, said: “We believe that we are the first pharmacy school in England to have sent our pass list for supplementary prescribers to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.” This was confirmed by the Society.

Altogether, 17 pharmacists successfully completed the course at Sunderland University in February. A further nine are currently their period of learning in practice. The Society has sent the 17 pharmacists the documents that need to be filled in before the register can be annotated to indicate that the pharmacists are supplementary prescribers. On receipt of the forms, it takes the Society seven days to complete the process.
