Pharmacists to be on new committees by right

Pharmacists in Scotland are to have guaranteed seats on new community health partnership (CHP) committees that are to evolve from local health care co-operatives. Pharmacists were not included in LHCCs.

CHPs will be expected to be involved in the planning, management and delivery of health services and to be better aligned with local authority/social services areas in order to create better results for local communities. One of their aims will be to enable professionals and their staff to develop innovative approaches to the delivery of care. They will use the opportunities offered by new contracts for community pharmacists and GPs, among others, to support a flexible workforce and to open up traditional career pathways.

One of the benefits of the new arrangements is expected to be greater involvement of health and social services employees in decision-making and priority setting.

Scottish Pharmaceutical General Council chairman Frank Owens commented: “This is real progress and good news.”
