Barry Shooter Pharmacies best to work for

Barry Shooter Pharmacies came fourth in The Sunday Times 2004 list of “50 best SMEs [small to medium enterprises] to work for”. Company profiles are listed in rank order and benefits such as annual leave, share ownership and child care are indicated.

Mr Shooter owns four pharmacies within a five-mile radius in Essex. Of his employees, 85 per cent said they were happy with the balance between their work and home lives, 83 per cent said they loved working for the organisation and 91 per cent thought there were strong principles in the company for treating their customers well. Mr Shooter registered in 1969 and opened his first pharmacy a few months later. His total revenues last year were £5.4m.

Boehringer Ingelheim ranked 15 in the list of 100 best [major] companies to work for, with Asda at number 31, Eli Lilly & Co at 56 and Aventis at 88 (The Sunday Times, 7 March).
