Council empowered to annotate Register to show qualifications and
status
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Byelaws now allow the Council to annotate the Register of Pharmaceutical Chemists to indicate pharmacists' qualifications, specialist areas or status.
This general provision is included in the recent Byelaw amendment that
allows recognition of pharmacists who become supplementary prescribers
(PJ, 28 February, p235).
The general provision did not appear in the draft Byelaw amendment notified
to the membership six months ago (PJ,
11 October 2003, p529) because it was already awaiting approval by the
Privy Council following an earlier consultation (PJ, 15 February,
p251).
Under the specific provision relating to supplementary prescribers, pharmacists
who satisfy the Registrar that they hold a practice certificate in supplementary
prescribing will have the annotation “sp” included against
their names on payment of a one-off fee of £35. According to a
definition added to the Byelaws, a supplementary prescriber is a pharmacist
who has the “sp” annotation against his name to signify that
he is qualified to order drugs, medicines and appliances as a supplementary
prescriber.
