New GP contract means new prescribing regulations

New regulations that restrict GP prescribing are to replace the regulations that created the NHS blacklist and limited list. The drugs on the lists themselves remain unchanged.

The National Health Service (General Medical Services Contracts) (Prescription of Drugs, etc) Regulations 2004, coming into effect on 1 April, contain a list of drugs, medicines and other substances that GPs may not order under their new GMS contract and a list of products that may be ordered only in defined circumstances. The lists match those in existing legislation, which will be revoked.

Stephen Lutener, head of regulation for the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee, said that the Drug Tariff lists will continue, and the rules relating to them are unchanged.
