Smoking rates fall in England

Smoking prevalence in England dropped from 28 per cent in 1998 to 26 per cent in 2002. The percentage of manual workers, more of whom smoke than average, also fell: 31 per cent smoked in 2002 compared with 33 per cent in 1998.

The new figures, which come from the General Household Survey produced by the Office for National Statistics, come as the Government introduces new regulations to restrict tobacco advertising. The regulations will limit the amount of advertising allowed where cigarettes are sold and are due to come into force at the end of this year.
