Tribute
Drummond In a tribute to
the late Douglas Blair Drummond, COLIN FERGUSSON writes:
Douglas Blair
Drummond passed away on 27 December after a short illness. Douglas
took over the T. S. McNee business
in Springburn in 1974 and soon built up a chain of pharmacies over the next
few
years.
He was a popular man and was respected and liked by all his staff and customers.
He had a huge love of life and lived it to the full. After retiring he spent
a lot of time travelling with his wife Pat and managed to fit in a few games
of golf, which was a great passion of his.
His father, the late Charles
Gray Drummond, was a past chairman of the Pharmaceutical Society in Scotland,
and donated to the Society the original shopfittings from his shop in the Grassmarket.
Douglas will be greatly missed by all who new him, and my thoughts are with
his wife Pat and family at this sad time. He is survived by Pat and three children,
Nigel, Alison and Neil.
Weinronk In a tribute to the
late Michael Weinronk, GEOFF DALE and GIB COLLINS
write:
We first met Michael on joining the
Wirral branch of the Society. At this time he was an established
and respected member of the branch.
He was born in Bootle, Merseyside in 1934 and while still quite young he
moved to the US to live in Pittsburgh for three years before returning to
England
to complete his education at the Liverpool Institute High School in Liverpool.
He then spent two years at the Sorbonne, University of Paris and returned
to Merseyside to serve his apprenticeship with a Mr Coleman in Liverpool
before
qualifying at the Liverpool School of Pharmacy in 1959.
During his student years he was a founder member and the first secretary
of the Liverpool School of Pharmacy Students Association and later served
as its
President.
Michael spent three years as sales manager of J. L. Morrison & Son in Lagos
and Port Harcourt, Nigeria, before joining Burroughs Wellcome & Co and
working as its representative in Israel.
By this time a married man with two sons, he returned to England where, in
1967, he opened the first of his three pharmacies on the Wirral. In 1975
he was elected chairman of the Wirral branch of the Pharmaceutical Society
and
president of the Birkenhead and Wirral Pharmaceutical Association. These
offices he
filled with exuberance and eagerness and in 1988 he was again re-elected
to these offices, which he filled with no less enthusiasm.
His other pharmaceutical interests included many years service as a member
of the
Wirral Local Pharmaceutical Committee and later chairman, also a member of
the Cheshire Local Pharmaceutical
Committee, a member of the Wirral Family Health Services Authority, a member
of the Numark Advisory Board, an adjudicator of the Merseyside Academic Practice
Unit Research Conference and a member of the joint consultative committee
of Wirral District Health
Authority.
In 1992 his services to pharmacy at the local level were recognised by the
Wirral branch in making him an honorary life member of the Birkenhead and
Wirral Pharmacists’ Association.
A year later his services to pharmacy were recognised nationally when he
was made a fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
Despite his involvement with pharmacy, Michael still managed to find time
for the other
passions in his life. These
included a love of travelling, and he visited many places in America, Canada
and Europe, including, of course, France. These visits
enabled him to pursue one of his favourite pastimes, that of food, both in
the preparation and the consuming.
Michael was seriously ill 12 years ago but made a good recovery. Tempered
with the disappointment of having to curtail his pharmaceutical interests,
he now
had the opportunity to further his love of travel and one important journey
he made was to Dublin to explore his roots and see where his grandfather
had lived.
Michael will be sadly missed
by his wife Davina, his sons
Nigel and Andrew, his
daughter-in-law Tee, his granddaughter Sophie, sister Naomi and all his many
friends and acquaintances who will greatly miss one of the real true gentlemen
of our time. |
