Independent prescribing for pharmacists to start in 2005
Independent prescribing by pharmacists will begin next year, the Department of Health confirmed this week.
Speaking at a prescribing conference at Homerton College, Cambridge,
on 2 April, Paul Robinson, policy lead for extending prescribing responsibilities
at the Department of Health, said that work towards independent prescribing
by pharmacists had begun. “We have had a brainstorming session
with representatives from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society but that is
all so far,” he explained.
Although Mr Robinson said that it was too early to give any more details,
he confirmed that a consultation on a framework for pharmacist independent
prescribing would take place later this year.
“Pharmacist independent prescribing is a priority for the Society,” David
Pruce, director of practice and quality improvement at the Royal Pharmaceutical
Society, told The Journal. “We are glad that the dialogue has begun
and we look forward to seeing the Department’s plans for implementing
pharmacist independent prescribing.” |
