Pharmacist is made a partner in Devon GP dispensing practice

Wallingbrook Health Centre: new pharmacist partner

A pharmacist has been made a partner in a rural doctors’ practice in Devon.

Karen Acott was made partner and practice pharmacist at Wallingbrook Health Centre in Chulmleigh, Devon, at the end of March. She is responsible for developing medicines management services and ensuring the effectiveness of the doctors’ dispensary service.

“I am delighted to be given such a unique opportunity to develop the extended role of pharmacists in this forward thinking and innovative practice,” said Mrs Acott. “Being offered a partnership demonstrates the value that the practice has placed on my future contribution.”

The practice’s senior partner, Chris Bowman, commented: “We believe that having Karen as a pharmacist partner gives us a unique opportunity to bring the benefits of a pharmacist’s skills to both the practice and the patients.”

A new service for patients with chronic diseases is planned, along with medication review clinics. These will be enhanced once Mrs Acott has completed her training as a supplementary prescriber. “I aim to develop a range of services locally that will focus on the patient partnership in medicines use,” she explained.

Mrs Acott was previously a pharmaceutical adviser at North Devon Primary Care Trust, and has worked in both community and hospital pharmacy.
