MeReC concludes evidence for extra benefits of latest antihistamines is lacking

There is insufficient evidence to support the use of third generation antihistamines, such as desloratadine (Neoclarityn) and levocetirizine (Xyzal) over second generation antihistamines (eg, loratadine and cetirizine), according to the latest issue of the MeReC Bulletin.

MeReC advises that the third generation drugs should be reserved for patients who cannot tolerate or who do not respond to other therapies

MeReC also recommends that allergen-specific immunotherapy should be reserved for patients with severe hay fever and poorly controlled symptoms. In terms of alternative therapies, MeReC suggests that butterbur or homoeopathy may provide benefit (2004;14:17).

A copy of this issue of the MeReC Bulletin can be downloaded from the National Prescribing Centre website or via the NHSnet (www.npc.nhs.uk).
