Canvassing complaints

Canvassing on behalf of the seven Save Our Society candidates in the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Council election has led to complaints. In a statement published this week (p519), the Society says that it has received complaints from members about unsolicited mailings. The complainants are concerned about the mailshots’ use of personal data, their breach of canvassing policy and the nature of their messages.

One mailshot is a yellow card headed “Vote for the seven SOS candidates”. It names the seven candidates and claims that electing all seven will give the Council a majority against the proposed new Charter.

Spokesman Mark Koziol said that SOS and the candidates themselves had agreed not to engage in any activity that might be construed as canvassing. However, he could not speak on behalf of the campaign’s supporters.
