New campaign urges men to use local pharmacies
Men are to be encouraged to make better use of pharmacies in a campaign to be launched next week. Called “Pop down your local”, the campaign is being organised by health education charity Developing Patient Partnerships. Several organisations, including the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the National Pharmaceutical Association, have also been involved in its development.
Kristin McCarthy, DPP director, said: “The accessible and confidential
services offered by pharmacies are ideal for men seeking on the spot
advice for minor ailments as well as general health and lifestyle information.
However, some men are not fully aware of when, or how, to use their local
pharmacy.”
As part of the campaign, community pharmacies have been invited to take
part in a window display competition (see Notice-board p503). The aim
is to create a window display that will entice men to use the pharmacy
more. A spokeswoman for the DPP said that community pharmacies should
already have received campaign materials.
The Society is encouraging its network of branch public relations officers
to engage with local media in support of the campaign.

Men with ED wait to seek
help A survey has revealed that over a
third of men with erectile dysfunction wait more than a year before
seeking help. Of the 50 men interviewed, 60 per cent were using an
erectile dysfunction treatment but nearly a third did not think their
current treatment was effective. The survey was funded by a grant
from Bayer and GlaxoSmithKline.
