Amlodipine reimbursement

On 1 May the category for amlodipine in part VIII of the Drug Tariff will change from category C (priced on the basis of a particular brand or particular manufacturer) to category A (drugs which are readily available).

The products descriptor (besilate) will be removed. The Department of Health has confirmed that for prescriptions reading “amlodipine besilate” where the contractor has endorsed “Istin”, contractors will be paid based on the list price for Istin. If the prescription has not been endorsed, payment will be based on the Drug Tariff price for amlodipine.

For prescriptions reading “amlodipine” or “amlodipine maleate (or another salt)” payment will be based on the Drug Tariff price for amlodipine.

For further information pharmacists should contact the National Prescription Research Centre on 020 8441 8427.
