Pharmacy staff with disabilities sought for research into work coping strategies

Researchers at the University of Reading want to interview pharmacists with disabilities about how they cope with their work.

Although their main interest is pharmacists, they also wish to contact pharmacy technicians and other pharmacy staff with disabilities of any form, including learning disabilities, who are or have recently been involved in patient care or in any work connected with medicines or health care, including advice-giving, academia, administration, publishing or management.

The research has been commissioned by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, which wants to ensure that its regulatory activities will comply with an extension of disability legislation that comes into force on 1 October. The Society’s legal advisers believe that it is a “qualifications body” under the terms of the new legislation.

The work is a prelude to a bid for funding for a project to identify and understand effective coping strategies employed by pharmacists with disabilities, so that the Society will be in a better-informed position to advise and support persons with disabilities who seek to join the Register.

Pharmacists and pharmacy staff willing to take part in the research should contact Alex Iantaffi (e-mail aimathom-research@yahoo.co.uk; tel 07956 516688 Monday–Friday 6.30–7.30pm only).
