NICE announces changes to ways of working

National Institute for Clinical Excellence technology appraisals are to be done differently.

Following public consultation the process is to be changed to include:

· Improved pre-appraisal scoping
· More time for consultation
· More detailed descriptions of methods
· More information on how decisions on cost-effectiveness are made

Documents setting out the new process have been posted on the NICE website. Later in the year, new “how to” guides will be introduced to help participants in the appraisal process submit their evidence.

The new appraisal process will be used for the 11th wave of appraisals. Appraisals in the current ninth wave and the soon to start 10th wave will follow a hybrid of the old and new appraisal processes.
