The Royal Pharmaceutical Society's museum has produced an information sheet on display glassware. It is the 15th sheet in its series on the history of preparation of medicines.

The new sheet looks at the history of carboys, specie jars and other display items used in pharmacy windows or on counter-tops. It includes illustrations from early trade catalogues and other images.

Briony Hudson, keeper of the museum collections, said: “The Society’s museum has a good collection of display glassware including many magnificent carboys and specie jars. This sheet gives us the opportunity to explain a little of their history and their development from practical origins to display purposes.”

In addition to the 15 information sheets on the preparation of medicines, the museum has published four sheets on aspects of the Society’s history. All are illustrated, and many of the illustrations are based on images available as postcards from the museum.

All the information sheets are available from the museum office (tel 020 7572 2210; e-mail museum@rpsgb.org) or can be downloaded from the “services” page of the museum section of the Society’s website.
