Tribute

Thurley In a tribute to the late Alan John Thurley, CHRIS KEELING writes:

Many pharmacists with connections to Boots The Chemists will be saddened to learn that Alan Thurley died unexpectedly following recent heart surgery. After qualification and national service, Alan moved from his native Sussex to work in the retail staff department within the head office of Boots The Chemists, where he held a series of key roles until his retirement.

He was ever present, whereas others came and went, and the nature of the man epitomised the ethos of the department. He was noted for his kindness, common sense, care and generosity, and many across the breadth of the company came to know him and respect him deeply.

He was a consummate family man and with his wife Paddy, their home was “open house” to many who had cause to come to the head office in Nottingham. He was a talented and prolific potter and had a passion for all things mechanical from vintage cars, motorcycles and clocks to lawn mowers and even stationary engines. Within his village community, at various times, he was chairman of the village hall committee, chairman of the governors, secretary to the parochial church council and church warden.

In all, he enjoyed a full life. His many friends and the community will miss him enormously and wish to offer Paddy and the family their sincerest condolences.
