Asda now joins National Pharmaceutical Association

The National Pharmaceutical Association has accepted an application from Asda for membership.

John D’Arcy, chief executive of the NPA, said: “The NPA, as a body representing pharmacy owners, will be at its strongest and most effective where it represents all pharmacy owners, and the addition of Asda to our membership is a significant step in that direction.”

He added: “The agenda facing community pharmacy has never been more challenging. A large and diverse membership is essential not only to ensure the NPA is properly resourced to tackle this agenda head on, but also to ensure that our view on pharmacy issues fully reflects the diversity of pharmacy ownership.”

Asda superintendent pharmacist John Evans said that it is important for everyone in the industry to be moving in the same direction. “We are pleased that the NPA board agrees,” he said. “It is necessary to consider views from all parts of the profession and we look forward to making a contribution.”

Asda is a member of the Company Chemists’ Association. Michael Keen of the CCA told The Journal that many of its members were also NPA members so this move by Asda did not represent a clash of interests. Each organisation represented unique interests, he added.
