The profession

What is being done about asylum-seeking pharmacists?

From Mr M. E. James, FRPharmS

A month ago you published an excellent survey on the possible effects on our profession of the extension of the EU (PJ, 1 May, p537).

However, I have seen little mention of another group of pharmacists, namely, those who have obtained, or are seeking, asylum in the UK to escape from persecution at home.

What steps are the Royal Pharmaceutical Society taking to contact such pharmacists and welcome them into our professional community? And, if such pharmacists contact the Society, what steps are needed for them to practise as pharmacists in the UK?

Miall James
Colchester, Essex

MARTHA PAWLUCZYK, adjudication manager in the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Fitness to Practise and Legal Affairs Directorate, replies:

Pharmacists who have qualified overseas and who have obtained or are seeking asylum in the UK apply to register with the Society through the Adjudicating Committee procedures. Since mid 1999, the committee has received 32 such applications. Information on the Adjudicating Committee registration procedure is available on the Society’s website.
