Privy Council nominee agrees to return to Society's Council

Michael Schofield: concerns remain |
Michael Schofield has agreed to return to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Council following his resignation at the June
meeting.
Professor Schofield, one of three members appointed by the Privy Council,
resigned because he was concerned about the Society’s future direction
following the change of President (PJ, 12 June, p749). The other two
Privy Council nominees put the Council “on notice” until
August.
The new President, Nicholas Wood, wrote to Professor Schofield to ask
him to reconsider.
“Council has asked that I write to you with the request that you
reconsider your decision to resign and that you remain, with the other
two Privy
Council Council members, on the Council up to the August Council meeting
on the conditional basis that significant and satisfactory progress to
resolve our difficulties is made by that time,” wrote Mr Wood.
In his reply, Professor Schofield said: “Although I do have serious
concerns, about which I will write to you privately, it would be discourteous
not to accede to your request and I am happy to do this.”
Professor Schofield told The Journal: “I resigned because I was
concerned about proper governance of the Council and about its
direction of travel.”
At the time of his resignation, Professor Schofield said that he would
write to the Privy Council, Department of Health and Council for the
Regulation of Healthcare Professionals to report his concerns about the
Council. He was about to so when he received the President’s letter.
Although he has not written to the organisations, he points out that
his concerns remain.
Over the next few months, Professor Schofield said that he would like
to see “a recognition of the needs of governance and the development
of a more collective spirit”. |
