OTC medicines market shows healthy growth
The over-the-counter medicines market in the UK grew by 4.1 per cent in 2003, according to data released this week.
The annual report of the Proprietary
Association of Great Britain shows
that OTC market growth in 2003 is much healthier than that for 2002 when
growth was only
1 per cent. The market from January to December 2003 was worth £1.973bn.
Pain relief and skin treatments saw higher growth in 2003 compared with
2002, and the hay fever and smoking cessation categories continued to
grow. Cough, cold and sore throat treatments increased by 3.9 per cent
compared with a decline in 2002. However, sales of vitamin and mineral
supplements continued to fall with a 3.3 per cent decline.
Mike Owen, of the PAGB, said: “It is very pleasing to see a healthier
level of growth in this market after an essentially flat picture.” |
