Code of conduct for Council members will be mandatory
The Council of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, at the June
Council meeting, agreed to seek an amendment to the Society's Byelaws to make compliance with the code of conduct for Council members a condition of Council membership.
The code has been voluntary since it was adopted in 1996 after the Nolan
committee report on standards in public life recommended that all public
bodies should draw up codes incorporating the seven principles of selflessness,
integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.
In 2000, the Council adopted a revised code, along with a statement of
undertaking, a register of Council members’ interests and a structure
for dealing with inappropriate conduct.
The provisions of the code include sanctions against Council members
who breach the code. These include suspension or removal from office
as a Council member.
The Council noted that making the code mandatory under the Byelaws would
necessitate some revision to the Council Governance Handbook. It was
agreed that draft revisions should be put in hand and submitted to a
later meeting of the Council.
