Sixteen pharmacists designated as fellows of Society

Sixteen pharmacists have been designated as fellows of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society by the panel of fellows. They are Joe Asghar, Susan Ashwell, Andrew Cairns, Roy Carrington, Robert Dewdney, Digby Emson, Alison Ewing, Eamonn Hoxey, Clive Jackson, Mohammad Khan, Robert McArtney, William McLean, Betty Mather, Phil Parry, Andrea Robinson and Phillip Williams.

The following brief biographical information about the new fellows is based on material provided by the panel to assist in identifying the pharmacists concerned.

Joe Asghar, who registered in 1986, was until recently regional pharmaceutical adviser to the Department of Health Northern region and director of pharmacy at the Northern region drug and therapeutics centre. He is now resident in New Zealand. He is vice-chairman of the governors of the College of Pharmacy Practice and a fellow of the college.

Susan Ashwell, who registered in 1976, is director of medicines management at Huntingdon Primary Care Trust and former director of pharmacy at Kettering General Hospital NHS Trust. She is a winner of the Health Service Management Development Award for a project on clinical effectiveness. She is a member of the Society’s Hospital Pharmacists Group Committee.

Andrew Cairns, who registered in 1966, is owner of a community pharmacy with an extensive veterinary side and is chairman of the Society’s Veterinary Pharmacists Group. He lectures to pharmacists studying for the Society’s modular diploma in veterinary pharmacy, and was involved in the creation of the diploma course and the production of the textbook used in the course. He represents the Society with the Veterinary Medicines Directorate and has taken the lead in Europe and the UK in promoting and negotiating pharmacy’s role in advising on veterinary medicines and their management.

Roy Carrington, who registered in 1969, is chief executive of the Association of Independent Multiples. He recently retired as chief executive officer and superintendent pharmacist of National Co-operative Chemists, for which he is now clinical governance facilitator in North Kirklees. He served on the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee for many years as representative of the Co-operative Pharmacy Technical Panel. He represented UK co-operative pharmacy on the management committee of the European Union of Social Pharmacists.

Robert Dewdney, who registered in 1978, is head of the Society’s education division. He has been involved in upgrading the three-year pharmacy degree course to a four-year master’s programme and in developing the competency-based system of preregistration training, the registration examination and the Society’s continuing professional development initiative. He is about to take up a post as director of academic support at the Welsh school of pharmacy.

Digby Emson, who registered 1974, is director of professional services and pharmacy superintendent for Boots The Chemists. He chairs a professional board co-ordinating clinical governance standards of all professional interests of the Boots Co. He has served on the Society’s Council since 1999. As delegate of the Company Chemists Association, he has served on the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee since 1994; he is a member of the contract planning committee and new contract negotiating committee.

Alison Ewing, who registered in 1982, is clinical director of pharmacy, Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust, and an honorary lecturer in the Liverpool school of pharmacy. She was previously director of pharmacy, Countess of Chester NHS Trust. She has been a member of the Society’s Council since 2000 and was vice-president for 2003–04. She represents the Society on the National Institute for Clinical Excellence Partners Council and is a member of the Department of Health Standing Pharmaceutical Advisory Committee.

Eamonn Hoxey, who registered in 1958, is senior director for quality and compliance services, Europe, Middle East and Africa, for Johnson & Johnson. He was previously head of device technology and safety at the Medical Devices Agency. He has been closely involved in developing British, European and international standards for sterilisation processes and equipment and quality management systems.

Clive Jackson, who registered in 1978, is chief executive of the National Prescribing Centre. He serves on the Cabinet Office task force on GP bureaucracy, the Department of Health working group on extension of nurse prescribing and the Department of Health advisory committee on topic selection for the National Institute for Clinical Excellence. He has been a member of the Society’s Council since 2002. He is a former regional prescribing adviser and governor of the College of Pharmacy Practice.

Mo Zafar Khan, who registered in 1971, is a community pharmacy proprietor and a consultant to the pharmaceutical industry. He is chairman of the Society’s West Metropolitan branch, regional communications officer for the Chiltern region and editor of Chiltern Digest. He is chairman of the Limbless Association and a special adviser to Mencap.

Robert McArtney, who registered in 1977, is All Wales Clinical Pharmacist Lead. He is president of the Guild of Hospital Pharmacists and scientific chairman for the European Association of Hospital Pharmacists congress. He is chairman of the Welsh Committee for the Professional Development of Pharmacy.

Bill McLean, who registered in 1962, is a pharmaceutical consultant specialising in veterinary medicines. He was previously a principal pharmaceutical officer in the Veterinary Medicines Directorate.

Betty Mather, who registered in 1956, is a former governor and chairman of the College of Pharmacy Practice and a former tutor for the Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education. She was executive pharmacist at Winthrop (later Sterling Winthrop).

Phil Parry, who registered in 1980, is an independent community pharmacist proprietor. He is a member of the Society’s Welsh Executive. He is chairman of Dyfed Powys Local Pharmaceutical Committee and chairman of Community Pharmacy Wales. He chairs the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee’s strategic planning and policy subcommittee and serves on its resource development and finance subcommittee. He serves on the PSNC medicines management quality assurance group and the Society’s medicines management education and training group.

Andrea Robinson, who registered in 1975, is a practice prescribing support pharmacist. She is chairman of the Society’s Welsh Executive. She serves on the Welsh Assembly Government supplementary prescribing task and finish group, chairing its implementation subgroup, and the Welsh Assembly Government advisory panel on substance misuse.

Philip Williams, who registered in 1989, is reader in the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Nottingham. He is a leading international scientist in the field of single molecule biophysics. He is a member of the peer review college of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and is a referee for grant applications for the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research, the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council.
