MPs to investigate industry's influence

MPs are putting the regulation of drug safety under the spotlight as part of a major parliamentary inquiry into “The influence of the pharmaceutical industry.” The House of Commons health select committee, chaired by Labour MP David Hinchliffe, is to look at the present regulatory system of drug safety and efficacy as part of an inquiry announced last week.

The investigation will begin in the autumn and will focus on the industry’s impact on drug innovation, medical research, drug information and promotion, professional and patient education, medicines regulation and product evaluation, including assessments of value for money. The first public sessions of the inquiry, where witnesses will be asked to give evidence before MPs, are expected to begin in September. Written evidence can be sent to the committee until 16 August and should be emailed to healthcommem@parliament.uk
