New Society policy on prescription charges

Abolition or major reform of the current system of prescription charges and exemptions could destablise community pharmacy and general practice, according to Eileen Neilson, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's head of policy development.

“The current system is illogical and unfair but a move to a more rational and equitable system requires careful planning and implementation,” she said.

Ms Neilson’s comments follow agreement of a new Society policy on NHS prescription charges. As part of the new policy the Society supports calls for a complete review of presciption charges and exemptions and will advise that any moves to change the current system are accompanied by measures to reduce any negative impact on patients, pharmacy and other health care services.
