First community pharmacy gains local accreditation in Hull

The first community pharmacy in East Riding and Hull to gain accreditation through a primary care trust-funded scheme was announced this week.

Selles Dispensing Chemists in Bransholme, Hull, was awarded a certificate for completing the East Riding and Hull community pharmacy accreditation scheme. The scheme involves the pharmacy meeting 50 standards around seven principles of clinical governance. Pharmacies receive £400 of funding and support to help reach the standards. Assessments are carried out by a clinical governance support pharmacist and a non-pharmacist member of the primary care trust.

Joe Crees, pharmacy manager at Selles Dispensing Chemists, commented: “Accreditation allows us to demonstrate to the public and the PCT that we have made a clear commitment to raising and maintaining our standards. The scheme has helped all members of staff consider how we can build quality into the services we provide.”

Nearly all of the 116 pharmacies in the area have signed up to the scheme, and it is hoped that over half will be accredited by the end of this year. Clinical governance support pharmacist Joanna Peachum said: “It is rewarding to see so many pharmacies making changes to their practice as a result of the scheme.” Her position is funded by the four local PCTs and she is seconded to East Riding and Hull Local Pharmaceutical Committee.
