Prescription charge statement shows Society's national policy can accommodate devolution

Andrea Robinson addresses the AGM

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society's recent statement on prescription charges (PJ, 26 June, p822) demonstrates that policies can be developed on a Britain-wide basis for local implementation in each of the home countries, the Welsh Executive's annual general meeting for members of the Society resident in Wales heard on 7 July.

Andrea Robinson, in her report to the meeting as chairman of the executive for 2003–04, said that the Welsh Executive had worked closely with the Society’s Lambeth headquarters to develop a new policy on prescription charges. It was a successful early test of the new ways of working within the organisation.

Another major issue covered by Ms Robinson was supplementary prescribing and the unique multidisciplinary education programme in Wales. She went on to highlight the strength of the profession in working together and illustrated this with reference to the Welsh Executive collaboration with Community Pharmacy Wales and the National Public Health Service for Wales to produce the report on the current position of community pharmacy-based substance misuse services in Wales for the Minister for Health and Social Regeneration.

The Welsh Executive’s annual report for 2003–04 was launched at the AGM. Copies have been distributed to all pharmacists with registered addresses in Wales. Further copies are available from Sarah Hickman at the Welsh Executive office (tel 029 2041 2800; fax 029 2041 2810; e-mail wales@rpsgb.org). Copies can also be downloaded from the Welsh Executive website
