Support for actions taken by the Council

From a group of past presidents of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society

You will recall that the undersigned past presidents of our Society took the unprecedented step of writing to express our concerns about the Society’s former proposals for a new Royal Charter, in particular the diminution of the Society’s role as the professional representative body for pharmacists (PJ, 6 July 2002, p15).

The Council has now agreed revisions to that draft Charter which will reaffirm the fundamental object of the Society as the professional representative body. Under the provisions of this new Charter the Council will be able to establish a committee with delegated power to achieve this object and we trust it will do so. We congratulate the Council on making these changes.

We also welcome the fact that members now have the opportunity to vote on the proposed new Charter — it is right that this should be so. Under the present Charter, registered pharmacists are members of the Society and it is they who make decisions on its future, a concept which must be preserved for future generations.

We believe that the revisions made by the Council represent a great advance. Having expressed our concerns in the past, we now consider it fitting that we express our support for the actions taken by the Council. It is our hope that all members will give full consideration to the proposed new Charter and use their vote to determine the future of their Society.
