STI rates continue to increase
Sexually transmitted infection rates rose again last year, continuing a trend that started in 1993.
Overall, new cases of STIs in England, Wales and Northern Ireland rose
by 4 per cent last year. New cases of chlamydia rose by 9 per cent and
new cases of syphilis by 28 per cent. Cases of genital warts also rose
(2 per cent), but gonorrhoea and genital herpes fell by 3 per cent and
2 per cent, respectively.
Health
Protection Agency chairman Sir William Stewart said: “This
is the time of year when many young people go on holiday and these figures
are a timely reminder of how important it is for people to take responsibility
for their own and their partners’ sexual health.” |
