Seven drugs endorsed by Scottish Medicines Consortium

Seroquel (quetiapine) and Zyprexa IM (intramuscular olanzapine) were among seven medicines to be endorsed by the Scottish Medicines Consortium this month.

Seroquel is approved for use for manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder and the new formulation of Zyprexa will be accepted for use in patients with schizophrenia who have disturbed or manic behaviour and for whom oral therapy is not appropriate.

Other recommendations include Enbrel (etanercept) for psoriatic arthritis, Seretide (salmeterol xinafoate/fluticasone) for asthma in children aged four to 12 years, Decapeptyl SR 11.25mg (triptorelin acetate) for advanced prostate cancer and Movicol Paediatric Plain (macrogol) as an alternative to Movicol-Half to treat child constipation.

Xalatan (latanoprost) is recommended for restricted use. It is accepted for treatment of raised intraocular pressure in patients with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma for whom beta-blockers are not appropriate.

Products that did not fare so well include Bextra (valdecoxib), which failed to be endorsed for primary dysmenorrhoea, Remicade (infliximab) for ankylosing spondylitis, Emtriva (emtricitabine) for HIV-1 infection and Aldurazyme (laronidase) for mucopolysaccharidosis.
