Employee representative service launched by PDA

The Pharmacists' Defence Association is setting up an employee representative service for pharmacists who have to attend a disciplinary hearing.

Mark Koziol, director of the PDA, explained that employers are legally obliged to allow an employee to be accompanied by a work colleague at a disciplinary hearing. “Currently this often ends up being a non-pharmacist or an inexperienced pharmacist,” he commented. “For this reason, we intend to establish and train a national bank of pharmacist employee representatives who will act as the ‘official work colleague’ for employees who are required to attend a serious disciplinary hearing within their work organisation.”

The service will be provided free of charge to PDA members. It will also be open for non-PDA members to use subject to availability of representatives and a fee to cover the costs of the service.

The PDA is asking employee pharmacists who would like to perform the role to register their interest on-line at www.the-pda.org or by telephone on 0121 694 7000.

Meanwhile, the PDA has launched a series of risk-management case studies that will be made available free of charge to all pharmacists. The case studies will be real-life examples of situations in which pharmacists have found themselves and will explain how the situations arose, what the outcomes where and lessons that can be learnt.
