Law change to protect animal researchers from extremists

Home Secretary David Blunkett was expected to announce tighter laws to restrict the activities of animal extremists after The Journal went to press.

The Government move comes amid growing publicity in the past week around animal rights protests at plans to build an £18m animal testing laboratory at Oxford University.

The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry would prefer the Government to bring in new legislation which deals exclusively with animal rights activists and activities. The Home Office, however, would not say whether any changes in legislation would be brought in as add-ons to existing laws or whether new legislation was planned.
