Society again to open its HQ building for London Open House weekend

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society is for the sixth time to take part in London's biggest annual architectural event, the London Open House weekend.

The event, which this year takes place on 18 and 19 September, gives Londoners and visitors the chance to tour more than 500 buildings across the capital — many of them normally closed to the public.

The Society’s headquarters building at 1 Lambeth High Street was designed in 1971 by the late David Hodges, of the Louis de Soisson Partnership, and was first occupied in September 1976. The building will be open to the public on the morning of Saturday 18 September between 10am and 1pm, with guided tours organised by the museum every 30 minutes (last tour at 12.30pm).

The tour will take in the assembly hall, the Council chamber, committee rooms, the museum displays, the Council dining room and the fifth-floor roof terrace with its views over central London and the River Thames. Displays of architectural models for the building will include the original scheme for an 11-storey headquarters.

Briony Hudson, keeper of the museum collections, said: “The Society’s involvement in London Open House last year was a great success with about 50 people visiting the building during the morning. The event provides a good opportunity to allow people access to our headquarters, and the museum’s displays within it.”

London Open House is an educational charity devoted to London’s architecture. Further information can be found at the LOH website (www.londonopenhouse.org), where a list of this year’s participating buildings will be available during August, or from 09001 600 061.

A buildings guide for the whole of London can be obtained by sending a self-addressed C5-size envelope bearing a 60p stamp to PO Box 25361, London NW5 1GY, with a cheque for £2 payable to “London Open House”. The guide will be available from the beginning of September.
