Boots wins a full service hospital contract

Boots the Chemists is to operate a hospital pharmacy at a private finance initiative hospital in Darlington. It is the company’s first foray into the managed sector.

The hospital is a new private finance initiative site in West Park, Darlington, and is part of County Durham and Darlington Priority Services NHS Trust. Boots secured the contract on 28 July following a competitive tendering process. It will provide dispensing services for inpatients, outpatients and day patients, specialist services for substance misusers, pharmacy support to wards and an on-call service.

“This is a new beginning for all involved because the hospital and community staff are transferring in from other sites,” commented Pradip Patel, Boots pharmacy superintendent. “This is very important for Boots and it sends out a strong signal that it is our intention to work closely with health and social care in a variety of settings.”

Boots will now be recruiting specialist pharmacists and technicians to staff the unit.
