New structure for Society’s publishing arm
Following a decision in May to create a more effective and accountable management structure for the Society’s publishing business, the Council agreed at the August
Council meeting to establish a new publishing board. The board’s role will be to identify specific policies
to ensure that the Society’s publishing business continues to
meet the Council’s expectations. It will also oversee implementation
of these policies.
Reporting directly to Council, the new board will comprise a part-time
chairman, a managing director and seven other executive and non-executive
directors. So that the Society’s chief executive can have oversight
of and input to publishing affairs, the Secretary and Registrar will
be the board’s deputy chairman. The managing director will work
with the board to determine and implement publishing strategy.
Collectively the new board will have a wide range of skills and experience
which will allow it to act with authority and to make decisions that
take into account both the needs of the profession and business realities.
For this reason, board membership will include publishing professionals
as well as leading pharmacists. It will replace the current Publications
and Journals Development Group.
To ensure that the board can start functioning by October, the chairman
will be recruited shortly. He or she will be expected to have board experience
in a similar-sized or larger organisation and a record of successful
leadership in a commercial environment, preferably publishing or the
pharmaceutical industry. Appointment of a suitable candidate will be
subject to approval by the Council.
