Council policy on harassment and bullying
The Council has adopted a statement on harassment and bullying for incorporation into the Council Governance Handbook and the Society’s Employee Handbook.
The statement, approved at the August
Council meeting, says that staff,
Council members and committee members have a right to be treated with
dignity and respect at work. The Society will not tolerate any harassment,
bullying or victimisation. The statement goes on to summarise the legal
position, to define harassment and bullying, to set out the responsibilities
of all concerned and to outline the procedures for handling complaints.
Presenting the statement on behalf of the Corporate Governance Steering
Group, Christine Glover said that it would apply to all those engaged
on Society business. It was in the Society’s interests to follow
good practice by adopting such a statement so as to make individuals
aware of their responsibilities and to place the Society in a better
position to deal with any problems that may arise.
The Vice-President said that the paper should be given wide publicity.
It would help others to focus on the issue.
Bob Michell said that it could be harassment for individual members of
Council to comment in The Journal on the way The Journal reported the
Council. If there was to be comment on that it had to be comment from
the Council as a whole.
Gerald Alexander said that he supported the paper and also supported
the suggestion that it should be publicised. It would set a good example
to the profession as a whole.
