Co-op pharmacists to take public health to men in bars

Pharmacists are to visit public houses and clubs under a new public health scheme to be offered by the Co-operative Group.

Under the scheme, pharmacists provide a healthy heart check to see if people are at risk of heart disease. A Co-operative Group spokesman explained that overweight male smokers were among those least likely to get health advice so this scheme aims to overcome this problem by taking health messages directly to them. It is also being used to raise awareness about simvastatin becoming an over-the-counter medicine. The scheme is being piloted in Milton Keynes, Leeds, Warrington and Ballynahinch in Northern Ireland.
