Volunteer agencies

Possible dearth of pharmacist volunteers

From Mr J. S. Beadle, MRPharmS

The statement from Philip Green in response to the letter from Ian Nock regarding UK registered pharmacists working overseas (PJ, 28 August, p288) also highlights a problem for those retired pharmacists contemplating voluntary work.
In the past, several pharmacists, myself included, have had the privilege of passing on our experience through assignments with various volunteer agencies to developing countries. With the current ruling on continuing professional development and the new registration fees, presumably the only way to cover future voluntary work overseas will be to register as a graduate in pharmacy and not as a pharmacist.
One hopes that the volunteer agencies have been advised of the future dearth of pharmacist volunteers for their projects.

John Beadle
Gravesend, Kent
