Simvastatin

Cut price Zocor Heart-Pro

From Mr J. Evans, MRPharmS

I had to respond to Ian Schlazer’s letter (PJ, 4 September, p312) complaining that Asda’s reduction in the price of Zocor Heart-Pro somehow means we are demeaning our profession. This is complete nonsense.

We campaigned for many years for the end of medicine price fixing and, since it was abolished over three years ago, we have rolled back the prices of over 300 medicines and kept those prices down. At Asda, we are committed to lowering the price of health care so that all customers can benefit from POM to P switches and will continue to do so.

To suggest that our “everyday low pricing” policy is at the expense of a professional service is ridiculous. Our pharmacists offer a superb professional service with real involvement in both local and national campaigns, such as this week’s blood pressure awareness week. We have consultation rooms in half of our pharmacies and the remainder will have them by the end of 2005. We are looking forward to getting involved with all aspects of the new contract and expanding our pharmacy offer following deregulation of the pharmacy “closed shop”.

As always, we will be innovative, challenge the status quo, and be a catalyst for change to help the profession focus on patents and away from the stagnation of the past 25 years.
