Wales agrees to same new contract model as England

Wales will use the same model for the new community pharmacy contract as has been agreed in England, it was confirmed this week.

Following a meeting with Community Pharmacy Wales on 13 September, Jane Hutt, the Welsh Assembly Government’s minister for health and social services, said: “The Welsh Assembly Government endorses the England and Wales model for a new community pharmacy contract.”

She added: “We will now be establishing a project implementation board for Wales. Its purpose is to deliver this contract within the context of our policy of developing a more proactive community pharmacy sector in Wales.”

Phillip Parry, chairman of CPW, commented: “We are reassured by the undertakings given to us by the minister on the new contract. There are now a number of distribution and other key issues which the profession will be working on with the minister’s officials in order to resolve them.”

Funding for the new contract in Wales had yet to be announced as The Journal went to press.
