FIP wants tobacco to be banned from all pharmacies

Licensing authorities should refuse to register pharmacies that operate from premises where tobacco is sold, the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) has said.

During the FIP congress last week, FIP president Jean Parrot said: “Pharmacists are health care providers involved in treating and preventing illness and promoting health, and are therefore central to achieving the tobacco cessation goals. Individual pharmacists should provide an example and leadership by being free of tobacco themselves.”

FIP is in favour of legislation to eliminate the sale of cigarettes from all licensed health care facilities and has a policy that pharmacists should not smoke and that professional organisations should act against members who do (PJ, 7 February, p146).
