Tribute
Tennant In a tribute to the late Helen
Jane Tennant (Column 3), STEPHEN
BAZIRE, on behalf of the pharmacy service at Norfolk and Waveney Mental
Health Partnership NHS Trust, writes:
Helen Tennant finally lost her
two-and-a-half year battle against cancer on Saturday 31 July. The funeral
at a packed St George’s Church in Norwich on Friday 6 August was,
at her request, a celebration of her life. We tried our best but the
shock to her colleagues and friends is still immense.
Although Helen knew several months ago that there was only one outcome,
she remained positive and had in fact been in the pharmacy department
only the previous week
to receive training on a new computer system — smiling and joking as ever.
Helen studied for her degree in Sunderland, undertook her preregistration training
at West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds, worked as a basic grade at Norwich
and Norfolk Hospital and then became pharmacy manager for the mental health services
in 1995. In 1996 she became pharmacy services manager when the department transferred
to Norfolk Mental Health Care Trust. She made the post her own, gaining a unique
degree of respect from staff, patients and carers alike.
It always seemed ironic that the youngest pharmacist in the department should
specialise and take such an interest in psychiatry of old age, although her knowledge
was wide. She was a member of the UK Psychiatric Pharmacists Group, and her last
appearance at the UKPPG
annual conference was in 2000 when she presented her winning work on medication
education in the elderly for the Bayer Old Age Psychiatry Award. The trouble
we had with the research was
that Helen’s ability to relate to patients was so remarkable that even
just her attendance at a session was enough to improve people’s attitude
towards medication.
It seems so cruel for this to happen at the tender age of 33. Helen had so much
to give but, more importantly, so much she wanted to give. She was one of the
loveliest and genuinely nice people you could ever wish to meet. Nothing was
ever too much bother, little visibly upset her and serene efficiency was natural
to her. Even when desperately ill she made it easy for people to see her, making
light of her illness and remaining upbeat, as usual always thinking of others
rather than herself.
Having informed the trust and pharmacy colleagues, my in-tray has been bulging
with genuine tributes from across Norfolk and the UK: inspirational, motivating,
absolute delight to work with, conscientious, accommodating, an absolutely lovely
person, friendly, attention to detail, calming influence, instinctively knew
what was right and wrong, and she made enormous contribution to patient care
and this is a shattering loss to the service.
Our thoughts go to Helen’s long-time partner Roger Dye and family, her
parents and her other relatives. There is a pharmacy department with a big hole
in its heart, and a health service the poorer.
