APPS

New organisation is not for technicians

From Mr D. Leech

Following your news story “Pharmacy staff organisation” (PJ, 11 September, p336), I am writing to clarify the role of the new Association of Professional Pharmacy Staff (APPS) which is targeted specifically at “all pharmacy staff who have completed the accredited course for medicine counter assistants”.

The APPS is not aimed at pharmacy technicians. This point was not picked up in the news item mentioned and has caused a little confusion among pharmacy technicians. The Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK was fully consulted by the APPS before its launch and supports the establishment of a distinct organisation that recognises the importance of medicines counter assistants and pharmacy assistant staff.

Darren Leech
President, Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK
