Society’s agent now ready to accredit assistants’ courses

The College of Pharmacy Practice, appointed by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society as accrediting agent for courses equivalent to the Scottish/National Vocational Qualifications Level 2 in pharmacy services, is now ready to accept applications from course providers for accreditation of courses for dispensing/ pharmacy assistants.

In the first wave of accreditation, applications received by 30 September will be accredited by 30 November 2004. Details of courses that have been accredited will be published on, or shortly after, this date.

Janet Flint, the Society’s head of support staff regulation, said: “The 1 January 2005 implementation date for the Society’s policy on minimum competence requirements for dispensing and pharmacy assistants is fast approaching and we look forward to receiving details of the first wave of courses to be accredited.”

From 1 January 2005 pharmacists will have a professional obligation to ensure that dispensing/pharmacy assistants are competent in the areas in which they work to a minimum standard equivalent to the (S/NVQ) level 2 qualification or are undertaking training towards it.

The requirement can be met by completing either the level 2 S/NVQ or an accredited equivalent, or by completing the relevant units of either course.
